Plagiarism Among Students

That's quite a serious title I've got there. Well, after the previous entry I take it upon myself to act a little bit more serious just for the sake of being the opposite, ahem.

As it turned out, the student bearing the goreng pisang was copying from some other paper. What made the difference was instead of jumping on the bandwagon of other students who stupidly copy verbatim anything and everything, this particular student of mine at least had the sense to understand what she was copying and at least tried to rephrase most of the sentences. I giver her credit at least for that. Needless to say, the goreng pisang was finished in 5 minutes flat. Goreng pisang or not, though, it is worrying to me about the state of tertiary education in Malaysia. How students aimlessly attend lectures without any preparation whatsoever, get into class in a dazed zombie-like manner and and just leaves without any value added to their body of knowledge by the time the class ends. When the time comes for assignments, they easily and proudly copy whatever they can get from the internet and hand it in sometimes with even the tell-tale blue box and unmodified font/style. Don't even get me started about the techniques they use to copy each other during exams.

Okay, serious mood out. Because it seriously is boring. It's raining heavily outside and I'm hungry again. Because five minutes after getting back to the office after lunch, my stomach did it's stunt since taking the EPO. My guts' contents are on the way to the Alam Flora sewer somewhere and now my tummy is asking for more. Am thinking of hot goreng pisang again. I'm not gonna see the student again until Monday so goreng pisang is out of the question. Anyone want to belanja me swiss mushroom burger from TGI? Heh.

I like my new template. Hik.

Okay have I told you yet I'm addicted to this?

Mak....

....in her prime years. She's far more fashionable than any of us, at least in her time. The permed hair, matching shoes, handbag and accessories, complete with umbrella. That was her signature. When we were all in our schooling years she was busy taking care of us so looking fashionable had to take the back burner what with financial constraints and all. Now, though, in her golden years Mak is back on the fashionable front. Again, at least, in her time and ripe ol' age of 72. I personally think that she looks much younger that her age, but I might be biased. She's MY mak after all. And take a gander at my Abah; complete with retro glasses.

...who is the makcik-est of them all? That would be Sleepyhead! Tehehehe....I got it while on the way back to Kuantan. We made a detour (I know it sounds ridiculous) to The Store, Alam Sentral Shah Alam. It's retailing at 50% of its original price.....CNY sales ma...only RM 39.90. Quite comfy and suitable for long walks on the beach.......which is what we did on Saturday. Mak cooked nasi minyak and gulai ayam. I fried up some prawns and a couple of salmon blocks. Ja and Abg Din brought fruits and drinks and off we went to Pantai Balok. Abah came way later (after his mengaji class and berborak sessions) and was only left with 2 prawns and gulai tanpa daging ayam. I bet he knew the food was going to be polished off before he arrived so he brought kuih kambas (? spelling) and some buns courtesy of Makcik Mas.

Pictures of the beach were forgotten because the picnic was centered around eating Mak's famous nasi minyak. On Friday Joe and I ventured out to Tanjung Lumpur in search of Nafisah's Keropok Sagu. Unfortunately Nafisah was otherwise engaged. Busy going to CNY open houses, maybe. So our plan B was to go to Mok Na's stall. The front section was filled with throngs of people queueing up to buy the sata. I wasn't interested in that so we went straight in to the dining area. No empty tables were to be found. Not at least, until we have stood around with a hungry look on our faces for about 10 minutes. Next, it came to ordering. Since this is only our second time here we looked at other tables for a clue. There were numerous plates of what seemd to be fish deep fried in batter so we ordered a set of those; and RM3 worth of kepok. Next, we saw the house specialty drink in the form of air jagung special. The "special" turns out to be a meagre scoop of corn flavord ice cream. But it looked quite attractive when it was being made so I ordered it on top of our iced lime tea and teh tarik. The service leaves much room for improvement. We had to wait close to half an hour for the fish to arrive and yet another 30 minutes for the kepok to arrive; and not without our constant nagging of the waiter-boy-person. Granted, there were so many people there; but I think for a business like this to survive it needs to think strategically and be prepared to cater to a large number of customers. Oh well, you can't have much hope for a smalltown kampung business like this, can you? Not without proper brains at the helm. And I think this Mok Na person has gone a little way over her head since so many people are visiting her stall. Needless to say, the kepok was gorgeous.....nice crispy outer layer which gives a crunch when you bit and then soft gooey center completes the palate. I can't say the same for the deep fried fish, though. It's a little bland. And the air jagung? So-so. In essence, I'd definitely go there for the kepok but only if there is no long queue or throngs of people.
